MVSD student enrollment in September came in at 753 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, Superintendent Grant Storey told the school board of directors on Thursday. The enrollment numbers include students in REACH, which serves homeschooling families, and Running Start, which allows high school students to enroll in college classes.

In May, the school district had anticipated 761 students enrolled in September, according to Storey.

Storey attributed the drop to lower enrollment in kindergarten. There were 56 children enrolled in kindergarten last year. This year, it’s 36.

LBHS, ILC and REACH saw increases in enrollment, according to Storey.

The superintendent reports monthly enrollment numbers to the school board. Student enrollment determines the amount of state dollars allocated to the district. If enrollment drops or increases, the school district will lose or receive more funding, respectively.

“We budget conservatively and though first glimpses show that enrollment is down this school year, these numbers still currently match our budget model,” Storey told the school board.
