MVE published 209 stories in 2025. What should everyone know locally, and what will I be following in 2026?
I’ve gone through all 209 posts and chosen ten highlights. These aren’t the most glamorous stories (only one made the top ten by readership), but they are stories that affect the fabric of our lives in the valley
In no particular order, here are ten local stories you should know from 2025.
What will I be following in 2026? These are some of the stories on my radar.
- MVSD. The district has hired a contractor to make the case for a bond levy for building improvements. This comes on the heels of the community rejecting a facilities improvement bond for Three Rivers Hospital. MVE will continue to cover school safety and LBHS’ theatre program.
- Twisp Police Department. Twisp Mayor Hans Smith is close to hiring of a police chief in 2026. Twisp hasn’t had a police chief in over two of the last three years since long time chief Paul Budrow was elected Sheriff of Okanogan County. Smith would like to see a working partnership with Winthrop police department and the sheriff’s office.
- Drugs. What will the overdose statistics be in the Methow Valley in 2026 and will the Narcotics Task Force be able to do its job with less state allocated funding and $5,000 contributions from Twisp and Winthrop?
- Housing. Housing development is happening behind the scenes. Housing Trust Executive Director Tom Venable is envisioning extensive growth in low to middle income housing in the valley, according to people involved in its planning.
- Snowball Prom. Methow Pride is reaching out to youths with cartoon-like advertisements. They ignited protests two years ago when children entered a drag show labeled an “all ages” event. Last year, the event was split between youths and adults, with the adult show held later in the night. The event is held in early spring.
