The Okanogan Highlands saw some frosty fun last weekend as anglers gathered for the 22nd annual Molson Ice Fishing Derby. Despite a slower bite than usual, spirits were high — and one impressive trout stole the show.
The winning catch measured 22.5 inches and tipped the scale at 4.4 pounds, earning Kaydi Colter of Manson a cool $500 in cash and another $500 gift certificate from Country Store. Not far behind her, Alberto Granados of Chelan landed a close second with a fish just a quarter-inch shorter, taking home $300. Rounding out the top three, Chuck Omit of Kettle Falls earned $200 for his 20.75-inch trout weighing in at 3.9 pounds.
In the youth division, young angler Joshua Willis of Oroville brought in a 16.5-inch, 1.15-pound rainbow on a tungsten jig — good for a $300 North 40 gift certificate and a tackle prize pack courtesy of Mack’s Lure.
While the fishing was challenging — only 20 fish were caught this year compared to 64 in 2025 — about 200 participants came out to Sidley Lake to enjoy a crisp winter day that began sunny at 26 degrees before a foggy afternoon rolled in. As local angler and Mack’s Lure pro staffer Chris Marcolin put it, “Tough bite with fewer than expected fish caught,” but plenty of camaraderie to go around.
Next up for hardwater enthusiasts is the Bonaparte Lake Ice Fishing Derby this Saturday at Bonaparte Lake Resort. Here’s hoping the fishing heats up along with the competition!
Brewster Bait and Tackle has live maggots and nightcrawlers and lots of tackle. Say you are fishing at the Bonaparte event for a nice discount!!
Dress warm and I hear the ice is over 8″ and icy slick. Take some form of traction for your shoes!!!

Have fun,
Tight lines
Mike
