John Duresky, a combat veteran running as a Democrat for Dan Newhouse’s seat in Washington’s Fourth Congressional District, said he welcomes the transition and is anticipating a crowded primary next year.

“We congratulate Dan Newhouse on his retirement and thank him for his years of public service,” Duresky said in a press release. “An open seat presents a very different race, and we are preparing accordingly.”

Duresky’s campaign said the district’s Democratic base has unified to support their campaign.

“While the Republican field is expected to grow, Democratic voters across the district have already largely coalesced around a single candidate,” according to the press release.

Next year’s primary will be the first open race in 12 years. With the support of the Democratic base in their pocket, the campaign can focus on moderate and independent voters.

“We are encouraged by the level of early unity and support we’ve seen from Democrats throughout Central Washington,” said Duresky. “That unity matters. It allows us to focus less on internal politics and more on the work ahead, listening to voters, building relationships, and presenting a clear, positive vision for the district.”

“An open race doesn’t guarantee outcomes,” Duresky added. “It raises the stakes. Voters deserve serious candidates who are willing to show up everywhere, answer tough questions, and engage honestly with the challenges facing our communities, from healthcare access and affordability to agriculture, infrastructure, and economic stability.”

“This race is about the future of Central Washington,” he said. “We’re ready to do the work.”
