The MVSD board unanimously adopted a $17.7 million budget for the 2025-26 school year, down slightly from $17.8 million a year ago. The budget serves 754 expected enrollees.
“This balanced budget maximizes funding sources, responsibly uses our local levies, accounts for conservative to stable enrollment, includes mandatory increases in the cost of salaries, insurance and pensions, and is in compliance with our fund balance policy,” Superintendent Grant Storey said in a prepared statement to the school board.
The school board certified the budget without discussion. The budget had already been approved by the North Central Educational Service District and by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Storey said the percentage of expenditure on education fell to 42.7% of the state’s operating budget. Public school students comprise 12.5% of the state’s population.
The district posted a notice about the budget meeting on its website and in Methow Valley News, as required by state law. The announcement on the district’s website was posted two days before the meeting.
There were no public comments except for one requesting greater transparency to the community for those that do not receive or read announcements in MVN.
School Board Chair Dana Stromberger did not offer a discussion on ways to increase public engagement. Prior to the budget vote last year, a community member had a question about the budget and was told only comments were permissable at the meeting.
“We will take note of that comment and look at that for future years,” Stromberger said on Thursday.
