The stars aligned at the Poetry Out Loud competition at the Merc Playhouse Wednesday night.

LBHS Junior Orlo Parkinson received first place, sophomore Anja Merkens second, and sophomore Elliot Pixie-Plott third, the exact placements in last year’s competition.

Six LBHS students participated in this year’s event: Firn Pepper, Liam Kiefer, Anja Merkens, Orlo Parkinson, Elliot Pixie-Plott and Aliyah Odion.

To commemorate America’s 250th anniversary since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Poetry Out Loud’s selection of poems eligible for competition are ones that honor American history and culture.

Students performed poems by Ann Bradstreet, Carl Sandburg, Kahlil Gibran, Leslie Pinckney Hill, Emma Lazarus, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Carlotte L. Forten Grimke, Henry David Thoreau, Katherine Rolston Fisher, Walt Whitman, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

Judges for the evening’s performances were poets Sierra Golden and Sam Owen, and Methow Valley News Publisher Don Nelson.

Poetry Out Loud is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
