Earlier this year, Washington State Legislature passed HB 1296, which rolled back parental rights recognized just a year earlier through Initiative 2081, colloquially known as the Parents’ Bill of Rights.
Initiative 2081 was brought before the legislature in 2024 through a signature gathering campaign that garnered over 454,000 signatures, more than the 324,516 needed to advance to the legislature.

Julia, thanks for following up on this story regarding the state legislature’s diluting the law that was overwhelmingly passed by initiative 2081 last year. It is obvious the majority party in the legislature did not want to have last years initiative be voted on by the people so they signed it into law which by doing so gave the opportunity for the majority party to water down the effect of the law. I encourage all Washington residents to support the two new initiatives IL26-001 (restoring parent’s rights) and IL26-638 (Protecting fairness in girl’s sports)
