I passed by a tree today that has seen me at least a thousand times, but I hadn’t really noticed it until today.

It’s limbs were, to use a pun, truncated, leaving a sinewy form. Did the property owners know it would survive? I don’t know, but today I noticed new branches growing from its stubs.

Like nerve sells regenerating, this tree defies its fate and seems to be saying- you may cut me down, but I will grow again.

I was reminded of another image last summer of a sunflower growing in a crevice of a busy (for a rural town) sidewalk in Twisp. It stood there defiantly. His two friends faced away from him. Never mind, said the sunflower, I will carve my own path and grow stronger and taller.
