Interim Police Chief Doug Johnson resigned effective June 2, Twisp Mayor Hans Smith announced on the town’s website. Johnson was working on a part-time temporary basis while he worked to fill two officer and one police chief position.

Johnson’s commission as a law enforcement officer was set to expire May 31 and Johnson chose to return to retirement, said Smith.

“I wish to note that I have much gratitude to Chief Johnson for his helpful and selfless work for Twisp over the past few months, and I truly wish him well in his now full retirement from law enforcement,” said Smith.

Twisp is contracting with the sheriff’s office thorugh the end of 2025, although hiring a local police force remains the mayor’s objective and Smith is asking for the public’s help.

“Please consider sharing our open position announcements with anyone that might be suitable to act in these positions,” said Smith. “I truly believe Twisp is a great community in which to be in law enforcement, and I would be happy to entertain any calls or inquiries from potentially qualified candidates about these open job opportunities.”
