Political operatives know they don’t get the summer off in a presidential election year, but today they didn’t get a Sunday off. It was in the fourth paragraph that Biden declared he will “stand down” and fulfill only the remainder of his term.

I imagine whoever was at the news desk on Sunday almost flipped over.

This is an enormous act of faith and courage on the part of the president. Difficult conversations were had in the preceding days and weeks, but it can still be very difficult to hand over the car keys.

This is an opportunity for the Democratic Convention to go back to its roots and actually nominate a candidate. It’s an opportunity to wipe the slate clean, rectify the situation and nominate someone that can unite and represent the country.

Politically, President Biden had to pass the torch to his vice president, but his convention delegates have no obligation to nominate her. This should be a democratic process. Delegates from all corners of the country have an opportunity to nominate someone that represents their communities’ values. A liberal, divisive candidate like California Governor Gavin Newsom will not appeal to middle America. It has to be someone that understands both sides of the political spectrum and can form a policy that unites more than divides, someone that can bring anti-Trump Republicans, Independents, and Democrats together. That person exists in middle America.

Race and seniority should not play a part in the selection process. It doesn’t matter if the vice president is black and Asian and a woman. Most people don’t know her and what little they do know about her, they don’t like.

America is divided. It needs someone that can speak to the heart of the American people. We need someone with qualifications, experience, and competence. Kamala Harris is not only divisive but has squandered opportunities to show capable leadership. My prayer and hope is that this rare opportunity is not squandered by the party elite ramming a nominee down the delegates’ throats. My sincere hope is that the nomination process is revived and revitalized in earnest and the Democratic convention in August shows what a true democratic process looks like.

The race is on. May the best person win.
